More than a decade after Tashan failed to live up to its massive pre-release hype, filmmaker Vijay Krishna Acharya is revisiting the film with a sense of perspective and gratitude. In an exclusive conversation with Screen, Acharya reflected on the backlash that followed the film’s release and recalled how Akshay Kumar, one of the film’s leads, stood by him at a time when the industry had largely turned cold.

‘Akshay Kumar beat his worst critics with Tashan’: Vijay Krishna Acharya recalls actor’s heartfelt gesture after film flopped
Released in 2008, Tashan marked Akshay Kumar’s return to Yash Raj Films after nearly a decade and brought together an ensemble cast that included Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Anil Kapoor. With its flamboyant style, pop-culture excess and genre-mashing ambition, the film was positioned as a bold reinvention of the mainstream Hindi entertainer. Instead, it struggled at the box office and was swiftly written off as a misfire.
“The backlash was relentless,” Acharya said, recalling the atmosphere after the film’s release. “It was one of those moments when everything you thought would work… just didn’t.”
Acharya revealed that as criticism mounted and the film became a punchline in industry circles, Akshay Kumar’s response stood out. Rather than distancing himself from the project, the actor chose to support the director publicly and privately.
“Akshay beat his worst critics with Tashan,” Acharya said, explaining that the actor refused to disown the film or deflect blame. “He didn’t complain, he didn’t shift responsibility. He stood by the film and by me, even when it was fashionable to mock it.”
According to Acharya, Akshay’s gesture was particularly meaningful because the film’s failure could easily have impacted his standing at the time. Instead, the actor treated it as part of the creative process rather than a personal setback.
In the interview, Acharya also shared a lesser-known detail about the film’s origins, revealing that Aditya Chopra played a key role even in the naming of Tashan. “Akshay Kumar’s name for Tashan was suggested by Aditya Chopra,” he said, underlining the level of involvement YRF had in shaping the project.
Tashan was conceived as an irreverent pastiche — blending the flamboyance of Manmohan Desai, the kinetic storytelling of Guy Ritchie, the stylised bravado of Quentin Tarantino, and the sharp wit associated with Salim–Javed. While the ambition was clear, the execution proved divisive for audiences accustomed to more conventional storytelling.

Looking back, Acharya suggested that Tashan may have arrived too early for its own good. “It wasn’t a safe film,” he said. “It was loud, self-aware, exaggerated — and it didn’t apologise for any of that.”
Over the years, Tashan has developed a niche following, with some viewers reassessing it as a cult oddity rather than an outright failure. The film’s music, visual style and unapologetic excess are often cited as elements that have aged better than its initial reception suggested.
For Acharya, the experience reinforced his respect for Akshay Kumar’s professionalism. Known for his discipline and prolific output, Akshay has weathered career highs and lows without letting individual failures define him.
“What I learned from Akshay is how to move on without bitterness,” Acharya said. “You take the hit, you learn, and you keep working.”
While Tashan did not achieve commercial success, Acharya believes the film taught him valuable lessons about risk, expectation and resilience in Hindi cinema. “Failures stay with you longer than successes,” he admitted. “But so do the people who stand by you.”
Years later, as conversations around creative ambition and box-office pressure continue to evolve, Tashan remains a reminder of a moment when Bollywood dared to experiment — and of an actor who chose loyalty over optics when the experiment didn’t pay off.
