Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman has spoken candidly about his involvement in the 2025 historical drama Chhaava, claiming that the film has been “divisive” while emphasising that being part of it was still an “honour.” Rahman’s comments, made during a conversation with BBC Asian Network, reflect both the praise and the controversies surrounding the movie’s themes and presentation.

AR Rahman says, “Chhaava cashes in on divisiveness”; DEFENDS his choice of composing music for Vicky Kaushal-starrer
Chhaava, starring Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna, was one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of 2025. While audiences flocked to theatres, the movie also drew discussion for its portrayal of Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and his conflict with Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb — a depiction some viewers found contentious.
Rahman admitted the mixed reception but defended his choice to work on the film’s music, noting the project’s core themes. “It is a divisive film. I think it cashed in on divisiveness, but I think the core of it is to show bravery,” he said. Rahman added that he initially questioned his involvement but was told by the director that the film needed him. He emphasised that Chhaava remained an engaging story that allowed audiences to use their own discernment: “Do you think people are going to get influenced by movies? They have something called internal conscience, which knows what the truth is, and what manipulation is.”
The composer also spoke about the emotional and cultural significance of the story. “Chhaava is the most celebrated character. It is like the blood of every Maratha. Once the film finishes, you see the girl saying the beautiful poetry… I’m so honoured to have scored that full movie, which has the pulse and soul of every Maratha,” he said, underlining the weight of the historical narrative behind the production.
Rahman also addressed specific criticism of some scenes in the film, particularly the use of religious expressions such as “Subhanallah” and “Alhamdulillah” in moments depicting negative or sorrowful events. “That is such a cliché. It is cringe,” he remarked, adding, “I have great respect for people. They are not that foolish to get influenced by false information. I have great faith in humanity. People have a conscience, heart, love and compassion.”
His remarks come as part of a broader reflection on art, responsibility and audience interpretation in a landscape where historical and cultural films can evoke strong responses. Rahman suggested that artists have a role in contributing positively through their work, saying, “That’s the reason God is giving more power to people like us so that we can replace the bad with good by word, action, art.”
Chhaava also triggered unrest in some regions after its release, with authorities linking episodes of public anger to its depiction of historical figures.
