Celebrated filmmaker Imtiaz Ali left audiences amused as he narrated an adorable and memorable moment with Sanjana Sanghi from the sets of his cult classic Rockstar, during a special conversation with Sanjana, who appeared in the film as a child artist.

Reflecting on her early experience, Sanjana on stage shared, “I was just 13 back then. I remember getting hypnotised each time Imtiaz sir briefed us for a scene. While shooting the last scene for Rockstar, Jordan (Ranbir Kapoor) and I were waiting in a room where people get their blood tested, it was shot in a hospital in Karol Bagh. I remember how suddenly he just pushed us to perform our best.”

Responding with characteristic humour, Imtiaz recalled a moment that he found both surprising and oddly humbling: “I remember briefing Sanjana for a scene, and she said, ‘No, I feel it should be done the other way.’ And Ranbir saying “Sir, she’s actually right”. It was very insulting for me in front of the entire crew,” he laughed as he recollected.

Sanjana and Imtiaz came together on stage for a special fan meet of Rockstar, a film that continues to resonate across generations not only through its music and storytelling, but also through Ranbir Kapoor’s iconic portrayal and Irshad Kamil’s unforgettable poetry.

For Sanjana, it marked the beginning of a journey she never saw for herself, of entering the magical world of the movies. Toady, even far beyond the screen from her heart-wrenching performance as Kizie Basu in Dil Bechara, a character that enjoys cult love, to her emergence as a global youth advocate through her work with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), championing youth-led development and inclusion.

Currently, Sanjana is also gearing up for her upcoming projecs, bringing her journey full circle from a 13-year-old on an Imtiaz Ali set to a young artist with global cultural and social resonance.
