Filmmaker Karan Johar has added his voice to the growing chorus celebrating Hindi cinema’s resurgence at the box office. Taking to his Instagram Stories, Johar hailed the massive success of Dhurandhar and Border 2, calling their back-to-back triumphs a clear sign that Bollywood has regained its momentum after years of uncertainty.

Karan Johar celebrates mega box office run of Dhurandhar and Border 2: “Bollywood is back!”
Sharing an emphatic note, Johar wrote, “The mega success of the two recent back to back mega Hindi film successes prove one thing….BOLLYWOOD (yes incorrect terminology but here to stay) is BACK! Naysayers can fly a kite! All DHURANDHARS will cross BORDERS of excellence when the films strike emotional chords with a paying audience!!!!” His wordplay-laden message quickly caught attention online, resonating with industry insiders and fans alike.

The post comes at a time when the Hindi film industry has been steadily working to rebuild its theatrical pull following the pandemic, which significantly disrupted viewing habits and box office performance. While several films struggled to bring audiences back to cinemas in the immediate aftermath, the success of Dhurandhar and Border 2 appears to signal a renewed sense of confidence among moviegoers.
Interestingly, both films are rooted in patriotism, yet they approach the theme in distinct ways. Dhurandhar, released in 2025, is a spy action thriller written and directed by Aditya Dhar. The film, headlined by Ranveer Singh alongside Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan, Arjun Rampal and others, draws loosely from real-life geopolitical events. Its gritty tone, high-stakes narrative and layered performances helped it connect strongly with audiences, translating into impressive box office numbers.
On the other hand, Border 2, which released in January 2026, taps into nostalgia while expanding the scale of its predecessor. Co-written and directed by Anurag Singh, the film is a standalone sequel to J. P. Dutta’s 1997 classic Border. Set against the backdrop of the 1971 India–Pakistan war, the film unfolds as a multi-front war drama showcasing coordinated operations by the Indian Army, Air Force and Navy. Led by Sunny Deol, with Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh and Ahan Shetty in key roles, the film has emerged as a major box office force early in the year.
Johar’s observation underlines a key takeaway from both successes: when Hindi films strike an emotional chord and offer a compelling big-screen experience, audiences are more than willing to return to theatres. As Border 2 continue to draw crowds, the industry appears to be entering a phase of renewed optimism — one where content, conviction and audience connect are once again taking centre stage.
