The film stars Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra Jonas in the lead roles together for the first time, alongside Prithviraj Sukumaran and Prakash Raj in key roles. Co-written by Rajamouli and V. Vijayendra Prasad, Varanasi is being produced by Sri Durga Arts and Showing Business.

The technical scale of Varanasi has already set it apart. With music by M.M. Keeravani, cinematography by P.S. Vinod, production design by Mohan Bingi, editing by Bikkina Thammiraju, and visual effects supervised by V. Srinivas Mohan, the film is notably the first Indian—and first non-English—project to be shot in the 1.43:1 IMAX format. The film is scheduled for a theatrical release in 2027.
