Tanishaa Mukerji begins 2026 with visit to Karla Caves; calls it “connection with ancient knowledge”
The Karla Caves, a group of ancient rock-cut monuments dating back to between the 2nd century BCE and the 5th century CE, are located along a historic trade route that once served as a monastery and a resting point for monks and travelling merchants. Over centuries, the site evolved into an important centre of spiritual practice, artistic expression, and cultural exchange.
Among the highlights of the complex is the Great Chaitya Hall, regarded as one of the largest and finest surviving early rock-cut prayer halls in India. The structure is noted for its soaring vaulted roof, finely carved stone pillars, a central stupa, and a prominent horseshoe-shaped façade that allows natural light to filter into the sacred space, enhancing its architectural and spiritual presence.
The caves also reflect the role of merchant and devotee patronage in shaping early Buddhist architecture, making them a key reference point for historians and scholars studying the evolution of cave and temple designs across the country. Today, the Karla Caves are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and continue to attract researchers, heritage enthusiasts, and visitors interested in India’s ancient past.
Through her understated yet meaningful visit, Tanishaa Mukerji highlighted the enduring relevance of such historical sites. Her gesture served as a reminder that monuments like the Karla Caves are not merely relics of history, but living spaces that continue to offer insight, inspiration, and a deeper connection to India’s cultural and spiritual heritage.
