Gustaakh Ishq has seen a slow start at the box office. Not that’s it’s surprising since the genre and the treatment are absolutely niche and hence is primarily for the select class audience at key urban multiplexes. There too the film would have relied heavily on word of mouth and in this case there is huge competition from another romantic film – which is far more massy – Tere Ishk Mein.

Moreover, this one isn’t a star studded affair. Vijay Verma has made a name for himself in the OTT space and this is his first major theatrical outing, albeit in a space which one otherwise associates with web series. Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sharib Hashmi too cater to select audience base and then while the presence of Naseeruddin Shah is delightful in the film, one waits for that to catch up amongst the audiences in days to come.
The first day of the film is under Rs. 1 crore (Rs. 50 lakhs) and that’s on expected lines since one didn’t foresee a major number from opening standpoint. The film has seen appreciation from critics and intelligentsia and now it’s all about how this translate into added footfalls in the weekend. It would definitely find an audience on the OTT but since a decent theatrical release has been given as well, one looks forward to some moolah being added to its tally too.
