DC fans just went nuclear on HBO Max’s Lanterns after the show’s second trailer dropped. Users on X unleashed a wave of criticism against Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern suit, calling it one of the worst comic book costumes they have ever seen.

Lanterns fans aren’t impressed with Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern suit
The second official trailer for HBO Max’s Lanterns dropped on May 18, giving fans their best look at Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan in full Green Lantern gear.
However, reactions on X revealed widespread disappointment with the suit’s design and color palette. Multiple users criticized the costume for lacking the character’s signature vibrant green appearance. One user posted side-by-side images of the suit and wrote “WTF man,” racking up nearly 195,000 views. Another user called the suit “That is easily a candidate for worst comic book suit ever.”

A separate post simply captioned the look as a “‘Green’ Lantern suit,” using quotation marks to mock its muted tone. One user described the costume as looking “more grey than green.”

The criticism extended beyond just color. One user asked, “But will they do the masks?” while sharing an animated GIF of the classic Green Lantern design.
Another wrote, “That suit is terrible, please don’t have John Stewart have the same one.” A different post asked, “Why is this show terrified of the color green,” echoing a recurring complaint from earlier marketing materials.

The backlash follows months of fan concern about the series leaning too heavily into its grounded, detective-style tone. Showrunner Chris Mundy previously addressed those worries by stating the show would feature plenty of green. The new trailer did showcase Hal Jordan’s ring constructs, flight sequences, and shield abilities in action.
Lanterns stars Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Nathan Fillion, Kelly Macdonald, Ulrich Thomsen, and Garret Dillahunt. The series reportedly splits its timeline between 2016 and 2026, with Chandler’s Hal Jordan operating in the earlier period.
Lanterns premieres on HBO Max on August 16.
