Ranveer Singh’s costume from the ‘Shararat’ track in Dhurandhar is designed as a visual marker of celebration, status, and period authenticity, aligning with the wedding festivities of his character, Hamza. Crafted in collaboration between Dhurandhar costume designer Smriti Chauhan and clothing brand Divani, the outfit reflects a conscious effort to ground grandeur in narrative purpose rather than spectacle.

According to Divani, the costume reinterprets a khilat—a ceremonial robe historically presented to royalty—once associated with the royal family of Patiala. The brand described the ensemble as a reimagining rather than a recreation, allowing it to retain historical weight while adapting it for cinematic movement and character-led storytelling. The design was developed specifically for Ranveer Singh’s character Hamza, with the intention that the costume feels organic to his world rather than ornamental.

The outfit features a richly embroidered long coat layered over a textured inner garment, paired with voluminous bottoms and an intricately styled turban. The embroidery, rooted in traditional zardozi techniques, forms dense, repetitive motifs that suggest rank and authority without overt embellishment. The muted, earthy colour palette—dominated by browns and antique gold tones—reinforces the lived-in quality of the look, aligning it with the film’s raw and period-specific visual language.

Director Aditya Dhar, whose comments were shared by the brand on social media, emphasised that Dhurandhar required costumes that belonged authentically to its universe. He noted that the film’s world-building depended on designs that went beyond visual appeal, adding that Divani brought together culture and couture in a way that supported the characters and the narrative. Dhar also pointed out that the collaboration involved months of close work between the design, direction, and costume teams to ensure continuity and depth.

Sanya Dhir, Founder and Creative Director of Divani, echoed this sentiment, describing Dhurandhar as a creatively immersive experience for the brand. She stated that Divani’s long-standing vision of reviving traditional crafts of the Indian subcontinent found expression through the film. Dhir highlighted that every aspect of the costume—from silhouette and embroidery to colour choices—was designed to serve the character first. The aim, she said, was authenticity over fashion, ensuring the garments appeared worn, functional, and true to the period rather than styled for spectacle.

Seen within the context of the film, Ranveer Singh’s costume operates as a narrative device, signalling Hamza’s identity, status, and environment without relying on exposition. The collaboration between Smriti Chauhan and Divani results in a look that quietly anchors Dhurandhar in its historical setting, demonstrating how costume design can shape character and world simultaneously.
