A new update from James Gunn has given DC fans a much clearer idea of what to expect from Lanterns. The upcoming HBO series is shaping up to be one of the biggest projects in the new DC Universe, and Gunn’s latest response online strongly suggests viewers are getting an entertaining ride packed with mystery, action, and Green Lantern lore.

Every episode of Green Lanterns series expected to be one hour long
Lanterns recently dropped a new teaser while confirming its August 16 premiere date. Shortly after, James Gunn replied to a fan on Threads who argued the series should have been made as a movie instead. Gunn answered, “You want to sit through an 8-hour movie,” which many fans took as confirmation that all eight episodes will run close to an hour each.
One fan joked back that it would still be possible, writing, “I sat through all of The Lord of the Rings in one sitting! I can do this.” Even though the comment was sarcastic, it showed how excited fans already are for the series. The teaser reportedly gives quick looks at several important characters and leans heavily into the darker detective-style tone DC has been teasing for months.
The show stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. The story follows the two Green Lanterns as they investigate a murder in Nebraska in what has been described as a noir-inspired mystery with True Detective energy. Nathan Fillion will also appear as Guy Gardner after debuting the character in Superman.
The supporting cast includes Kelly Macdonald, Garrett Dillahunt, Jason Ritter, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, and Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro. The series is being led by Ozark showrunner Chris Mundy, while Lost creator Damon Lindelof is attached as co-writer and producer.
Gunn has also stressed that the series will feel very different from Superman despite existing in the same DC universe. He previously explained to ScreenRant that he wants each DC project to have its own style and tone while still remaining connected overall.
