Veteran Malayalam actor, screenwriter, director, and producer Sreenivasan passed away on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at the age of 69 in Kochi, marking the end of an influential era in Malayalam cinema.

According to reports, Sreenivasan had been battling prolonged health issues. He was en route to Amrita Hospital for dialysis when his condition suddenly deteriorated. He was rushed to Tripunithura Taluk Hospital, where he breathed his last early that morning. Born on April 6, 1956, in Patyam near Thalassery in Kerala’s Kannur district, the multifaceted artist leaves behind a profound legacy spanning nearly five decades.

Sreenivasan debuted as an actor in P.A. Backer’s Manimuzhakkam (1976) and took his first lead in Sanghaganam (1979), but his true breakthrough came as a screenwriter with Odaruthammava Aalariyam (1984). He penned landmark films like Gandhinagar 2nd Street, Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam, Varavelpu, and the cult classic Nadodikkattu, blending sharp social satire, political critique, and relatable middle-class humour that reshaped Malayalam comedy and drama.

Frequent collaborations with directors Priyadarshan, Sathyan Anthikad, and Kamal defined the 1980s-90s golden era, while later works like Udayananu Tharam, Katha Parayumpol, and Njan Prakashan— one of Malayalam cinema’s highest-grossers—kept his edge relevant for new generations.

As a director, he helmed Vadakkunokkiyanthram (Kerala State Best Film) and Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala (National Film Award for Best Film on Other Social Issues).

Sreenivasan is survived by sons Vineeth Sreenivasan (singer-actor-director-producer) and Dhyan Sreenivasan (actor-director-producer), continuing his cinematic legacy.
