Vijay Varma is set to headline Matka King, which is scheduled to release on April 17 on Amazon Prime Video. As anticipation builds around the project, the actor has spoken about the personal parallels he draws with his character, Brij Bhatti.

Known for his performances in films like Gully Boy and series such as Mirzapur, as well as projects like Dahaad and Darlings, Varma has built a reputation for taking on varied roles. In Matka King, he plays an ambitious gambler who rises to become a key figure in Mumbai’s matka betting circuit.
Speaking about the similarities between his journey and that of Brij Bhatti, Varma told Bollywood Bubble, “I am not from Bombay. So, coming here with very little resources and a few friends and with the ambition and a dream to become an actor and to stick by your rules and believe in yourself when nobody believed in you and to create opportunities for yourself and to grow and to find success. That whole journey has been similar in that way.”
He added, “But of course, Brij Bhatti found an enterprise wherein he was able to do this by making people gamble. I am able to do it by making people watch my work and get affected by my work. But the similarity ends with this, that the guy who dreamt of something and made something out of his life.” Varma’s remarks underline his journey from Hyderabad to Mumbai, where he pursued acting with limited resources and gradually established himself in the industry.
With Matka King, the actor steps into a narrative centred on ambition, risk and success, set against a gritty urban backdrop. The film is expected to further showcase his range as a performer.
