At IFFI, Nagarjuna and the team reveal how the Ram Gopal Varma cult classic was brought back to life with stunning 4K visuals and Dolby Atmos sound.

Nagarjuna’s ‘Siva’ returns in stunning 4K and Dolby atmos: The seven-year restoration odyssey that rescued a Telugu cinema masterpiece
Restoring a classic film is never simple—it requires patience, persistence, and a deep respect for cinematic history. That was exactly the approach taken by the technical team at Annapurna Studios when they undertook the monumental task of remastering Nagarjuna’s iconic ‘Siva’ for a grand theatrical comeback in a premium, cutting-edge format.
At the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, Nagarjuna participated in a special session to share how the game-changing Ram Gopal Varma debut underwent a near-impossible transformation. The remastered version finally hit theatres earlier this month, after a seven-year journey led by CV Rao, Chief Technology Officer at Annapurna Studios.
“The remastered version of ‘Siva’ is stunning. I see so many films coming to life with this technology. I was even talking to Ramesh Sippy sir and told him I’d love to hear the sound of the coin in ‘Sholay’ in a new way! Since this is the 50th year of Annapurna Studio, we thought what better film to restore than ‘Siva’, which remains a cult classic,” Nagarjuna said at IFFI, during the screening of the new version.
The restoration process began even before 2019, fully aware of the challenges ahead. The original negatives were deteriorating rapidly, and with many labs shutting down, proper maintenance—temperature control, regular cleaning—had become increasingly difficult. “That’s when we realized we needed to digitize and secure the film properly. When we finally inspected the picture negatives, they were so sticky we couldn’t even unroll them. We had to run them through four to five rounds of ultrasonic cleaning just to make them dry and rollable for scanning,” Rao explained.
Once a 4K scan was achieved, another challenge emerged: the footage was riddled with scratches, dust, and torn frames. Cleaning each frame by hand became a painstaking process that took eight to ten months. The team faced yet another obstacle when examining the audio: two reels of the sound negative were completely damaged. “We tried whatever was available online, including YouTube, but that wasn’t sufficient for a theatrical restoration,” Rao said.
The breakthrough came with a remarkable idea—tracking down original prints stored by exhibitors. “Fortunately, our distribution team at Annapurna Studios helped us locate prints across the Telugu states. We approached passionate exhibitors who had preserved old film prints despite the storage challenges. After contacting nearly 20 exhibitors, we found two surviving reels that allowed us to recover the missing audio,” Rao noted.
Released in 1989, ‘Siva’ is considered one of the greatest Indian films of all time. It not only broke box office records but also received critical acclaim, and was featured in the Indian Panorama mainstream section of the 13th IFFI (1990). The remastered version, now in 4K with Dolby Atmos sound, ensures that a new generation of audiences can experience the film as it was meant to be seen, preserving its legacy for years to come.
