Prime Video’s Rings of Power season 3 will reportedly premiere later this year.
The next instalment of the Lord of the Rings spin-off had been rumoured to land in 2027 due to production and post-production times on previous seasons but, according to The Hollywood Reporter, it will be released sooner than expected.
Rings of Power holds the record for Amazon’s biggest-ever debut series, with season 1 having amassed 25 million viewers in one day.
According to the official plot synopsis for season 3, the new instalment is set to feature a time jump.
“Jumping forward several years from the events of season two, season three takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war and conquer all Middle-earth at last,” it reads.
Returning cast members for season 3 include Charlie Vickers as Sauron, Morfydd Clark as Galadriel and Robert Aramayo as Elrond.
Meanwhile, new additions to the cast include Jamie Campbell Bower (Stranger Things), Eddie Marsan (Sherlock Holmes), Andrew Richardson (Ponies), Zubin Varla (Andor) and Adam Young (Sex Education) in yet-to-be-confirmed roles.
The season 2 finale saw brutal deaths at the hands of Charlie Vickers’s Sauron, setting the stage for a battle with the Elves, while fans also learnt the true identity of Daniel Weyman’s The Stranger.
Rings of Power showrunners have been clear they’re aiming for a five-season arc, with JD Payne previously telling Radio Times: “In some ways it was a plan from the very, very beginning.”
He continued: “The earliest days we were talking about this project and this property and where we thought there was a story that demanded to be told.”
He added: “What’s great about this era of Middle-earth’s history is that there are these incredible tentpole events.
“They’re laid out in the appendices in the books. We fashioned the show so that each season would would, you know, be built around a couple of these major tentpole moments… And you have to stay tuned to see what we do next time.”
