Christopher Nolan has established himself as one of the most prominent names in the film industry over the past few decades and has earned more than $6 billion worldwide from his movies. However, according to his brother, Jonathan Nolan, it all began with Christopher Nolan’s take on Star Wars in their basement. Jonathan Nolan has also collaborated with Christopher on several projects over the years.

Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan recall their childhood with Super 8 camera
In a recent interview with 60 Minutes, the Academy Award-winning director Christopher Nolan discussed his upcoming project, the ambitious adaptation of Homer’s epic, The Odyssey.
During the interview, Nolan revealed that he first entered the world of filmmaking with a Super 8 camera, shooting films inside his home. “Very much about Super 8, yeah. Super 8 home movies. And I’m actually old enough to have started on Super 8. My family had a Super 8 camera instead of a video camera,” Nolan said during the interview.
The director’s brother, Jonathan Nolan, who has collaborated with Christopher on several projects, expanded on those memories. “My earliest memories literally are of Chris making movies,” Jonathan recalled. “Our take on Star Wars, of course, in the basement, blowing up some of my toys with firecrackers. Probably 8 or 9 years old at that point. I would have been 3 or 4,” Jonathan added while recalling Christopher’s early attempt at making a Star Wars-inspired film.
Jonathan was also asked what fascinated Christopher about the camera. Jonathan explained, “I think he’s just always been captivated by the idea that you could take this device and use it as a portal into another universe. It was like a door.”
Christopher Nolan made his feature film debut in 1998 and gained international recognition with his second feature, Memento. He is currently regarded as one of the most acclaimed working directors in the industry.
