The face of a new suspect in the Theo Silverton (James Cartwright) murder investigation has been placed on the evidence board in Coronation Street.
Last month, following wedding celebrations on the cobbles, Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin) found his body in the corner shop backyard.
We know, from quotes from series producer Kate Brooks to Radio Times and other media, that the reveal of the murderer won’t come until late June or July. That means that, in true soap opera style, pretty much every Weatherfield resident will be questioned in the meantime.
So far we’ve seen George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley), Christina Boyd (Amy Robbins) and Gary Windass (Mikey North) questioned, though the full list of suspects include Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce), Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby), Gary Windass (Mikey North) and Danielle Silverton (Natalie Anderson).
Today’s episode saw Summer thrust into the spotlight, following her revelation that she was planning to leave the area for a new life at an American university.
She looked visibly unnerved when DC Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) informed Todd that they were closing in on Theo’s killer, and it would only be a matter of time before they were exposed.
While she went to collect the last of his things from the corner shop flat, George and Christina noticed a pile of her belongings cluttering up the corner of their living room.
George mistakenly knocked her bag onto the floor, and was intrigued to find her journal. While Christina advised against reading it, they were intrigued by a particular page that spelled out her desire to aim a gun at Theo’s head, and to make him pay for his wrongdoings.
Suddenly, Summer returned home and discovered what they were doing. She was terrified that this would look badly in her favour, and so threw the journal onto a fire in the backyard.
George questioned her behaviour, saying that by disposing of the book, it made her look suspicious.
However, little did the family unit know, attentions were already beginning to turn towards her. While flicking through her wedding photos with Kit, Lisa Connor-Swain (Vicky Myers) clocked a photo of Summer chatting to two of the partygoers.
She was wearing the brooch that had been found in Todd and Theo’s flat, seemingly confirming that she had been there on the night of the murder.
