Director Dean DeBlois has shared the first official look at Hiccup’s sword from the upcoming live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2. The photo comes alongside a filming update on the sequel to the 2025 remake.

DeBlois posted the first look image of Hiccup’s fire sword on Instagram, announcing the completion of an 81-day shoot. “Onto post production. See you in June of ’27!” he wrote. The close-up photo shows a hand gripping the hilt of Inferno, the retractable blade Hiccup wields in the animated sequels. The prop’s design suggests a weathered, functional aesthetic consistent with the live-action franchise’s approach to its Viking world. Production on How to Train Your Dragon 2 began on January 26.
The fire sword Inferno originated in the 2014 animated version of How to Train Your Dragon 2. Hiccup used it to rescue the dragon Stormfly and ignite Zippleback gas canisters during a pivotal battle. The weapon reappeared in 2019’s How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, where the sequel opened with Hiccup lighting the blade through mist before later using it to trigger an explosion alongside Astrid’s gas canister. Its inclusion in the live-action sequel means adherence to important narrative elements from the animated trilogy.
Now, fans will get to see how DeBlois, who has guided the franchise since its inception, shows it in the upcoming live-action sequel. He co-wrote the first animated adaptation of Cressida Cowell’s children’s book series alongside Chris Sanders and Will Davies. He subsequently assumed sole directing and screenwriting duties for the two animated sequels.
The returning cast includes Mason Thames, Nick Frost, Nico Parker, Gerard Butler, Gabriel Howell, and Julian Dennison. New additions include Cate Blanchett as Valka, Hiccup’s long-lost mother; Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as dragon hunter Drago; and Phil Dunster as dragon trapper Eret.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 is releasing on June 11, 2027.
