Javier Bardem has opened up about transforming into Max Cady for Apple TV’s new Cape Fear series – and why it was important not to simply echo what had come before.

The new 10-part psychological thriller sees Bardem take on the role of convicted killer Cady previously played by Robert Mitchum in the 1962 film and Robert De Niro in Martin Scorsese’s 1991 remake, with creator and showrunner Nick Antosca promising a version of the character that honours the past while also offering something new.
Speaking exclusively to Radio Times, Bardem explained that finding his take on Cady meant avoiding imitation.
“We tried to find something that was exciting to play and to hold for 10 episodes, that didn’t have anything to do with what we’ve already seen on De Niro or Mitchum,” he said.
The actor added that Cady’s appearance – tattoo-ed, scarred, with striking blue eyes – was partly shaped by his backstory in this version of the tale.

“And this idea of this look — also, he’s the son of an American and Spanish, so it has to be something combined, like the colour of the eyes,” Bardem continued.
“He has a very horrible wound in his head, and that should be reflected in some way, somehow — in his eyes, maybe. So, yeah, those are the fun elements to play with. It’s like a toy that you play with, and then one day it all comes together.”
Antosca, meanwhile, revealed that Bardem had been his dream choice for the role from the earliest stages of development.
“There was never any question about who we wanted, and there was no other option than Javier Bardem,” he said.
“The role of Max Cady is so memorable and so iconic in the pantheon of film culture that it was essential that we have somebody who can embody that menace and bring that gravity, but also do something different.”
Antosca added that Bardem was even part of the pitch before there was any guarantee he would say yes. “He was the person who, when I went to Apple, and when I went to other networks, I was pitching this around a couple years ago, I would say in the pitch, ‘picture Javier Bardem’, even though we had no idea if we would be able to get him.”
Once the series moved forward, Antosca said he and Bardem had detailed conversations about how this Max Cady could stand apart from earlier versions.
“Once I was actually writing the script, I met with him, and we talked really extensively about what this version of Max Cady would be, and how he would be frightening and complex in a new way, but also magnetic and seductive, and honour the legacy of what Mitchum and De Niro did.”
Cape Fear stars Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson as married attorneys Anna and Tom Bowden, whose lives are upended when Cady is released from prison and begins infiltrating their family.
