Little House on the Prairie on Netflix will hit different says the showrunner. It’ll be a whole new experience compared to the original TV series inspired by Laura Ingalls Wilder‘s celebrated books.

Rebecca Sonnenshine on differences between Netflix’s Little House on the Prairie and original show
Little House on the Prairie will be a fresh adaptation rather than a reboot drawn from Laura Ingalls Wilder’s beloved book series. In an interaction with Entertainment Weekly, the upcoming TV series’ showrunner, Rebecca Sonnenshine, outlined the key differences between the Netflix show and NBC’s original decade-old series.
According to Sonnenshine, the new adaptation doesn’t shy away from the era’s prejudices: “People had prejudices. Of course we wanted to portray that there are people who have a problem, and there are people who don’t… I really want to present a very humanist interpretation of the books.”
She also mentioned that the upcoming show encompasses elements from Laura’s real life “that are from outside the books, that were part of her life, or a part of history at that time.”

Netflix’s Little House on the Prairie is primarily based on the third book in Wilder’s series, drawing from her childhood experiences as it follows the Ingalls family’s life in Kansas. “Part hopeful family drama part. epic survival tale, and part origin story of the American West, this fresh adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s iconic semi-autobiographical Little House books offers a kaleidoscopic view of the struggles and triumphs of those who shaped the frontier,” reads the official logline.
The new Little House on the Prairie show features Alice Halsey as Laura Ingalls, Skywalker Hughes as Laura’s older sister Mary, Luke Bracey as Charles Ingalls, and Crosby Fitzgerald as Caroline Ingalls. Jocko Sims, Meegwun Fairbrother, Ryan Robbins, Barrett Doss, Mary Holland, Michael Hough, Kowen Cadorath, Thosh Collins, Maclean Fish, Rebecca Amzallag, and Xander Cole will be seen playing recurring roles.
Already renewed for Season 2, Little House on the Prairie’s eight-episode Season 1 arrives on Netflix on July 9, 2026.
