Lord of the Rings icon Andy Serkis has joined the cast of The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 in a mystery role.
The series, which is a spin-off from Dungeons and Dragons based web series Critical Role and revolves around a ragtag group of mercenaries on a series of dramatic adventures, will return to Prime Video with the fourth instalment on 3 June.
The casting news was revealed by Matt Mercer, Sam Riegel and the rest of the Critical Role crew in an Instagram video.
Taking off his t-shirt to reveal a t-shirt underneath that bore the face of Serkis, Riegel said: “We are so excited to reveal that Andy Serkis is joining the cast of The Legend of Vox Machina season 4, and joining my t-shirt collection.
Mercer added: “Watch the show to see who he plays.”

Serkis is best known for playing Gollum in Peter Jackson’s film series. And he’s readying for another return to Middle Earth in 2027’s The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt of Gollum, which he’s also set to direct.
The actor is also well known for playing Supreme Leader Snoke in the Star Wars sequel trilogy and Caesar in the Planet of the Apes reboot series.
Other film credits include Alfred Pennyworth in The Batman, Ulysses Klaue in the MCU, Long Shot, and SAS: Red Notice, while he has helmed movies including Breathe and Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 is set to pick up a year after the ending of season 3, which saw the Chroma Conclave cause widespread destruction, while the Cider King hunted down Vox Machina, resulting in a shocking character death.
When we first meet them in season 4, our heroes are separated and scattered around the globe. However, after an evil awakens to threaten the realm, the gang soon reunite to take on a dark foe.
The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 will premiere on Prime Video on 3 June 2026.
