While the second season of The Pitt finished airing some time ago in the US, it has now finally come to a close in the UK as well, with all 15 episodes available to stream on HBO Max.
The emotional finale brought another memorable shift to an end, with fans now desperate to see the next instalment of the acclaimed medical drama.
Thankfully, they shouldn’t have to wait too long, with the series attempting to stick to an annual schedule, and plenty of details already coming out about what we can expect the third time around.
But what do we know so far about season 3, who from the cast will be returning and just when are the episodes set to be released?

Will there be The Pitt season 3?
There will! The Pitt was renewed for a third season in January 2026, before the second season had even debuted.
Speaking exclusively with Radio Times as the show debuted in the UK, Dr Robby star Noah Wyle said that, as the show continues, “our task as writers is just: ‘Where would they be 10 months later? Where would they be five months later?’ And to really flesh out [the characters’] back stories, and they begin to kind of tell you the story.”
He continued: “They behave in a certain way that creates conflict, that expresses where they want to go next. And we try to be as honest to that as possible.”
When will The Pitt season 3 be released?
The creators of The Pitt are trying to ensure that the series sticks to a yearly release schedule, and seasons 1 and 2 have both started releasing episodes from January of 2025 and 2026 respectively.
We would therefore expect season 3 to follow suit, and start releasing in January 2027 – and executive producer and director John Wells has said that’s the aim.
Wells told Deadline in April of this year: “The writers’ room opened up last week, and they’re at the end of their second week. We will be back in production in June, and plan to be back on the air again the same week in January with 15 episodes next year.”
There’s also a slight question mark over when season 3 will arrive in the UK. Season 1 took over a year to arrive on this side of the pond, and season 2 started airing episodes in March, rather than January.
However, this seems to have been entirely due to the rollout of HBO Max being delayed in the UK, in comparison with its US release. Now that the platform is available here, we imagine the streamer will sync up its release schedules, and season 3 will start airing from January, the same time as in the US.

What will The Pitt season 3 be about?
Little has been revealed about The Pitt season 3 just yet, but we’d imagine it will follow a similar format to the first two runs of the show – charting a 15-hour shift in the emergency room in almost real time.
The one thing Noah Wyle has teased ahead of time is that season 3 will likely have a shorter time jump than that seen between seasons 1 and 2, which were 10 months apart.
He said: “The only time jump we’re interested in making is to get into a different weather season, to get into a slightly different mode of cases that come with a change in weather. If that was summer, then what happens in the winter when you get cold, snow and black ice.”
He later gave a clearer sense of the timeline, revealing: “It’s set in early November, just before the holidays, ushering in a whole new set of emergencies and confrontations and complications.”
Wyle revealed the news at the Warner Bros Discovery Upfronts, and Deadline has speculated that this could either be just before Veterans Day on November 11 or Thanksgiving on November 26.
Who will return to star in The Pitt season 3?
We know that Noah Wyle will be returning to The Pitt, with Dr Robby back for another shift. He will be joined by the majority of the other major cast members from season 2, including Patrick Ball, Katherine LaNasa and Gerran Howell.
Meanwhile, Dr Samira Mohan star Supriya Ganesh has left the series after the end of season 2. This is reportedly an entirely story-led decision, which will make sense for those who have had a chance to see further into season 2’s episode.
Wyle told Variety of Ganesh’s exit: “It’s an inevitability that’s going to happen every season with this show because as writers we’re hard pressed to figure out what a lapse of time we can have and keep most of the ensemble together realistically. Emergency rooms have a high revolving door.
“As always, we try to bring in new characters or promote from within as we go through these cast changes and try to keep the storylines fresh, but obviously Supriya has been a huge part of our show since the beginning. Dr Mohan is a beloved character, and I love playing with her and working with Supriya, and we wish her all the best in her next endeavours, and we’re going to miss her.”
Meanwhile, The Pitt’s creator R Scott Gemmill said: “It’s sort of the nature of the show. Unfortunately, the way the medical profession works, you come in, you learn, you move on, and we want to try and be as truthful to that process as possible. So we’re going to turn over our cast. But I think it’s a great launching pad for people and that’s the best we can do.”
Additionally, Ayesha Harris, who has appeared in some episodes of both seasons 1 and 2 as night shift senior resident Dr Parker Ellis, is becoming a series regular, meaning she will join the main cast for season 3.
There have also been some new recurring cast members confirmed, with Pruitt Taylor Vince (Superman), Malachi Beasley (A House of Dynamite), Cheyenne Perez (The Sex Lives of College Girls), Jeremy Radin (The Accountant 2), Charlz Williams (Seal Team) and Rosanny Zayas (The L Word: Generation Q) joining in undisclosed roles.
