The recently released Hollywood film Obsession is doing very well at the box office, surprising the trade and industry. However, there’s also anger on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), after it came to light that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) made cuts in two crucial scenes. On the other hand, word has spread on the internet that the film will be available on OTT on June 2 and hence, one should skip Obsession’s theatrical release in order to enjoy an uncut version.

EXCLUSIVE: The INSIDE story of Obsession’s CBFC cuts; digital release delayed, NO uncut version on OTT for India
Bollywood Hungama spoke to a trade expert who explained what happened behind the scenes. He said, “Many people are directing their anger towards the studio, Universal Pictures. They feel that the studio should have fought harder, especially since they secured a censor certificate on May 4, which is, almost 25 days before the release. Hence, they reason that the studio had the time to fight it out and release the film without cuts.”
The trade expert continued, “From what we heard, Universal Pictures did try their best to get the film cleared without any cuts, especially since the film received an ‘A’ rating. But the Examining Committee (EC) had reasons to believe that such sexual and violent content is not suitable for the Indian audience.”
Producers or distributors unhappy with the EC’s decision have the option of approaching the Revising Committee (RC). The source revealed, “If one approaches the RC, there’s always a possibility of a long wait. As a result, Obsession’s release could have been further delayed. Moreover, there may also have been an apprehension that even after the delay, the RC could have upheld the EC’s decision.”
An industry insider commented, “These are tough calls that studios take. Fans should realize that even the production houses want to release the film without any cuts. They don’t get any kick by cutting scenes. But even they are helpless in such situations. Last year, Superman (2025) also got into controversy over cuts in the kissing scenes. Without cuts, the film may have received an ‘A’ rating. Superman is loved by the kids and hence, they took a tough decision of accepting the cuts so that the film is available to a wider audience.”
The insider added, “Thankfully, Obsession’s cuts don’t affect the film much and it’s still an enjoyable film, especially with a huge crowd in theatres.”
On the other hand, there are rumours floating on the internet that Obsession will be available on OTT on June 2 and hence, one should skip Obsession’s theatrical release in order to enjoy an uncut version.
However, a source told Bollywood Hungama, “Obsession will not release on OTT on June 2. Indian audiences should understand that whenever Obsession arrives on streaming, they will get to see the same version as the one playing in cinemas. As per the rules, streaming platforms cannot release an uncensored version in India, especially when the film has already been cleared by the CBFC and released theatrically in the country.”
