The long-awaited Face/Off 2 movie has received an intriguing new update from Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage. This comes three months after it was confirmed that Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard will no longer helm the sequel. Before his exit, Wingard had been part of the project since 2021.

What did Nicolas Cage say about Face/Off 2?
During a recent interview with Variety, Cage was asked about the current status of Face/Off 2 after Wingard’s exit. The acclaimed actor admitted that he doesn’t know the specific reason why Wingard left the project, but he hopes he’ll have the chance to work with him again in the future. As for the sequel’s ongoing progress, Cage admitted that he’s currently unsure if the project is still moving forward at Paramount Pictures.
“Listen, Adam and I had a great lunch together at the Smoke House in Burbank, and we had a terrific conversation. We share similar interests. I like what he’s been doing with the Godzilla group, and we talked about one of our favorite supervillains in the old Godzilla movies, which was Hedorah. I’m sure at some point our paths will cross again,” Cage shared. “I don’t know what happened, and I have zero idea if it’s going to happen. I’m the last guy to know anything.”
Paramount Pictures started the development on the Face/Off sequel in 2019, with Spider-Noir showrunner Oren Uziel attached to write. In 2021, the studio enlisted a new creative team to take on the highly anticipated project, including Wingard and writer Simon Barrett. Following Wingard’s exit, the studio is reportedly looking for filmmakers to pitch their ideas for the long-in-development sequel.
The original 1997 movie was directed by John Woo, with Mike Werb and Michael Colleary writing the screenplay. It featured John Travolta as an FBI agent who swaps faces and identities with a terrorist, portrayed by Cage. The iconic action movie remains Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a 93% approval rating.
