Warner Bros. and the Russo brothers are teaming up for a reimagining of 90s killer whale franchise Free Willy.

Per THR’s story the studio has tasked Mary-Margaret Kunze (Miller’s Girl) and Jade Halley Bartlett (The Turning) with bringing the captive-whale drama to modern audiences.
Released in 1993, the original Free Willy told the story of a 12-year-old orphaned boy named Jesse (Jason James Richter) who forms a bond with a captive Orca whale at a rundown water park. When he finds out that Willy is set to be disposed of, he hatches a plan to return the whale to the wild.
Made for $20 million, the Simon Wincer (The Phantom) directed film grossed $153.7 million at the worldwide box-office, produced three sequels with diminishing returns, as well as an animated television series and a smash-hit Michael Jackson song ‘Will You Be There’.
