New Line Cinema’s Last Friday movie has finally received an exciting update about the current progress of the long-awaited project. The fourth installment of Ice Cube‘s popular comedy franchise has been in development since 2025.

What’s the new update for Ice Cube’s Last Friday movie?
During a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, the Friday franchise stars Ice Cube and Mike Epps have officially confirmed their return in the upcoming Last Friday movie. They revealed that the new sequel is still “going down” at Warner Bros., and is already scheduled to start filming later this year. Further details about the project’s plot are still under wraps, but the story is expected to tackle the “gentrification of a neighborhood.”
When asked about Rush Hour star Chris Tucker‘s return, Cube and Epps shared that they are already having discussions with Tucker, revealing that he’s interested in reprising his role as Smokey. Even though Tucker’s return hasn’t been finalized yet, Cube is confident that Tucker will ultimately sign on for the project.
“We’re talking to him, and he wants to come back,” Epps said.
Cube added, “He’s one of the best. I think he’s going to do it.”
Before the studio officially confirmed the project’s development, Cube had actually been trying to develop the next installment of the Friday franchise since 2017. However, it took a long time to move forward because it kept encountering creative setbacks. More than a year ago, New Line Cinema confirmed that they were able to finally close a deal with Ice Cube to write and star in another Friday movie.
The Friday franchise was created by Ice Cube and DJ Pooh, which began with 1995’s buddy comedy film Friday. It revolves around two friends, Craig Jones and Smokey, who must find a way to repay their debt to a drug dealer while also dealing with a neighborhood bully. Due to its critical and commercial success, the film was followed by two more sequels, 2000’s Next Friday and 2002’s Friday After Next.
