“Do that once more and see what happens.” 🇲🇽 Mubi has unveiled the first official trailer for the acclaimed Mexican indie film titled simply Flies, the latest from Mexican filmmaker Fernando Eimbcke (also of Duck Season, Lake Tahoe, Club Sandwich, Olmo). This originally premiered at the 2026 Berlin Film Fest earlier this year with some strong reviews out of that fest. It’s next playing at the Sydney Film Festival in Australia, but has no final US release date set yet, only out in Latin American cinemas this July. A carefully controlled world begins to shift –Olga lives a strictly regulated life without any attachments in a vast apartment block. When she has to rent out a room in her apartment to a father, she forms an unlikely bond with his 9-year-old son when, unexpectedly, their lives become intertwined. Starring Teresa Sánchez, Bastian Escobar, Hugo Ramírez, and Enrique Arreola. Reviews state that Eimbcke “delivers a humbly poignant film that affirms his lineage with the great children’s auteurs like Lamorisse and Truffaut.” Well, that’s some mighty high praise! This definitely looks quite charming & amusing, with just the right balance of both in this story.

When, out of financial necessity, she is forced to rent out a room, a man moves in who also sneaks his nine-year-old son into the flat. To her own surprise, Olga begins to form an unlikely bond with the child. Her carefully controlled world begins to shift and, entirely against Olga’s will, these three lives start to become intertwined.” Flies, also known as Moscas in Spanish, is directed by acclaimed Mexican filmmaker Fernando Eimbcke, director of the films Duck Season, Lake Tahoe, Club Sandwich, and Olmo previously, plus many other short films. The screenplay is by Vanesa Garnica & Fernando Eimbcke. Produced by Michel Franco, Eréndira Núñez Larios, Fernando Eimbcke. This initially premiered at the 2026 Berlin Film Festival earlier this year and is also showing at the Sydney Film Festival. Mubi debuts Eimbcke’s Flies in theaters in Latin America only starting July 2nd, 2026 this summer. No US release date is confirmed yet. Interested?
