Headlined by Sydney Sweeney as Millie, the film adapted the bestselling novel into a tense cinematic experience, examining how control, loyalty and survival collided within a home that was far from what it appeared.

Sydney Sweeney led the film as Millie, a character who initially came across as kind and innocent but gradually revealed deeper and more unexpected layers. Director Paul Feig explained why she was his clear choice for the role, saying, “Honestly, I couldn’t envision anybody else being as perfect for Millie. It’s a tricky role because Millie has to seem innocent at the start, before you realise how complex she really is and how much she’s hiding. I knew Sydney could do that after seeing her performance in Reality.”

Feig’s comments highlighted how demanding the role is and how Sweeney brought both vulnerability and inner strength to the character, allowing Millie’s true nature to unfold naturally on screen.

Screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine added to the film’s intrigue by pointing out how the audience’s perspective shifted as the story progressed. “You root for Millie at first. But then you start questioning everyone, including her. Is anyone really telling the truth?” she said. This growing sense of doubt lay at the heart of The Housemaid, where trust slowly turned into suspicion and every character’s truth remained deliberately unclear.

With its atmospheric storytelling, layered performances and carefully built tension, The Housemaid presents as a psychological thriller designed to stay with audiences long after the final frame.

The Housemaid, brought to India by PVRINOX Pictures, is scheduled to release in theatres across India on 1 January 2026.
