In a candid and refreshing conversation, Bollywood actor and filmmaker Pooja Bhatt opened up about the complex dynamics of her family. Speaking about the time her father, acclaimed director Mahesh Bhatt, fell in love with actress Soni Razdan, Pooja shared intimate details about how the family navigated the emotional transition with grace and maturity.

Pooja Bhatt recalls Soni Razdan feeling “guilty” over relationship with Mahesh Bhatt: “You could not have broken up a relationship…”

During a detailed chat with journalist Vickey Lalwani, Pooja recalled a deeply personal moment shared with her stepmother, Soni Razdan. She revealed, “Soni had a heart-to-heart conversation with me… She said, ‘Pooja, I too feel so guilty, felt very guilty’. I told her with all of my heart, ‘Soni, you could not have broken up a relationship that was together. There is no space for anybody in a relationship that is solid unless there are crevices there or something was lacking so somebody else could come and find that space.’”

Pooja further surprised many by revealing that she was actually the first person in the family to know about her father’s new relationship. Instead of keeping it a secret, Mahesh Bhatt chose to be completely transparent with his daughter from the very beginning.

Recalling that life-changing morning, Pooja said: “In fact, I knew about Soni before my mother did. He woke me up and said, ‘I have to let you know that I have met this lady and I am going to be moving out. It doesn’t mean that I love you any less, and I will always be there.’ I said agar woh mujhe nahi kahega to kisko kahega? (If he won’t say it to me, then who will he say it to?)”

For Pooja, honesty within the family was far better than finding out about their private lives through external sources. “I would rather have heard it from my father’s mouth or my mother’s mouth than hear it from Stardust magazine, Cine Blitz or the mohalla,” she mentioned.

While the separation was undoubtedly difficult for everyone involved, Pooja Bhatt noted that her parents handled the situation with immense maturity. Even though her mother, Kiran Bhatt (born Lorraine Bright), went through a period of great pain over her marriage ending, her parents “always maintained decorum and grace with each other”.
