A Super Mario 3 movie is happening, and one of the actors teased its release date window. The update follows The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s near-billion-dollar theatrical run. Keegan-Michael Key, who voices Toad in the animated franchise, shared the projected timeline. His remarks align with earlier comments from costar Jack Black.

Super Mario Movie 3 could arrive in 2029, says actor
Key shared that the Super Mario 3 movie will have a 2029 theatrical release date window. The actor framed the extended wait as a creative choice by directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.
“We want to get everything right. We want to get all the details right,” Key told ScreenRant. “And Michael and Aaron, who are our directors, have a real passion for this. I think they’re as passionate about these projects as the audience is. And so we got to get it right, we got to get it right. So I apologize. But it’ll be worth the wait. It’ll be worth the wait…’29 is better than sometime, right?”
The three-year gap mirrors the production schedule between the first two films. The Super Mario Bros. Movie released in 2023, bagging $1.36 billion at the global box office. In addition to having three Golden Globe nominations, including Best Animated Feature. Illumination spent a similar period developing the sequel, which expanded the franchise into outer space.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie released on April 1 and soon became the highest-grossing movie of 2026 so far, surpassing titles such as Project Hail Mary and The Devil Wears Prada 2. The story follows Mario and friends as they battle Bowser and Bowser Jr., who have kidnapped Princess Rosalina.
Illumination and Universal have not made an official announcement regarding a third film. However, Key’s confirmation of the Super Mario 3 movie release date target suggests internal planning is well underway. The digital release of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is available now, with physical copies launching on June 16. A Peacock streaming date has yet to be confirmed.
