Eric Kripke on if The Deep Popcorn Bucket foreshadows his fate in The Boys
Kripke admitted the Deep popcorn bucket did not intentionally foreshadow the character’s death in The Boys finale. He toldDeadlinethat the gag simply reflected the Deep’s established personality rather than any deliberate narrative setup.
However, the showrunner now embraces the connection retroactively. “Now, whenever anyone asks me, I’ll be like, ‘Yes, of course, that was obviously what we were doing,’” Kripke said. He clarified that the bucket moment was simply “The Deep, being The Deep.”
The character’s demise in the finale mirrors his refusal to change throughout the series. Annie offered him one final chance to take responsibility for his actions in the last episode. Kripke noted the Deep “consistently makes the wrong choice, and he pays for it.”
Actor Chace Crawford reacted positively when Kripke informed him about the Deep’s fate. “I made it to episode 8, baby!” Crawford told Kripke after learning his character dies in the finale. Crawford felt excited that the Deep survived the entire run of the show.
Kripke also acknowledged the Deep deserved a prominent role in the series finale. He pointed out that very few core Supes remained by the final season. Even Noir had technically died seasons earlier, with an actor merely playing the role afterward.
The showrunner also joked about the popcorn buckets’ impractical design at the 4DX premiere. “When you have them in person, you can barely get your hand in the mouth,” Kripke said. He does not recommend anyone actually use them for popcorn.
The Deep’s arc ultimately reinforced one of the show’s central themes about accountability. Kripke stressed that the character received “so many opportunities to make the right decision” throughout five seasons. His final refusal to accept responsibility sealed his fate in the series finale.
