Filmmaker Vikram Bhatt recently looked back on one of the most challenging phases of his life, revealing that despite directing a major star like Aamir Khan and being in a relationship with former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen, he was struggling financially.

Vikram Bhatt recalls being broke while directing Aamir Khan and dating “Miss Universe” Sushmita Sen: “Mere pas zeher khane ke paise nahi the”
Speaking to Siddharth Kannan in a recent interview, Bhatt shared candid details about his early years in the film industry. He said, “I was a struggling director. Mere pas zeher khane ke paise nahi the. I was directing Aamir Khan and dating Miss Universe, so to say, but I had no money. I was broke. I remember I didn’t even have the money to buy a CD. I’ve lived life like a fakira.”
His comments come shortly after businessman Lalit Modi publicly defended Sushmita Sen against the “gold digger” label that surfaced when their relationship became public. Modi had described Sen as a financially independent and self-made woman, stating that there were times when she paid for everything during their relationship.
While reflecting on his personal journey, Bhatt chose to focus on the positive impact people have had on his life. The filmmaker said that every relationship, regardless of how it ended, taught him something valuable.
“Whoever came into my life has done something good. When I look back, I have love and admiration for everybody in my life. They’ve always given me something. What was there to take away anyway? Some gave me love, some gave me their time, some gave me a life lesson. But they did give me something or the other,” he said.
Bhatt also drew a distinction between his personal relationships and his professional achievements. According to him, while relationships may not have lasted, his work continues to resonate with audiences years later.
“My films have survived; relationships haven’t. I must have done something right in my films. For example, in the barrack, nobody knew what you did back then. Half of them weren’t even born then. But everyone remembers my films. So, I know what wins. Your hard work will win,” he added.
Over the years, Vikram Bhatt has directed several successful films across genres, including thrillers and horror dramas that have left a lasting mark on Hindi cinema. His latest remarks offer a glimpse into the struggles behind the success and the lessons he carried forward from both his professional and personal life.
