After over a year since the first season premiered, Running Point season 2 arrives to bring Academy Award nominee Kate Hudson back into the world of basketball. In the comedy’s first season, Hudson’s Isla Gordon became the unexpected new president of the Los Angeles Waves basketball team and facing all kinds of challenges from her brothers, the public, and the players.

Running Point, which comes from Mindy Kaling, also navigated the complicated revelation that Isla and her three brothers have a half brother they never knew about. Between the complex situation the franchise faces on the court to the various behind-the-scenes headaches Isla weathers off the court, the comedy delivers plentiful laughs that are, to use a basketball phrase, a slam dunk.
But what do you need to remember from the Running Point season 1 finale before the new season premieres? If you didn’t have time to rewatch the full first season, we’re sharing three of the biggest developments from the last season you can’t forget before diving into season 2.
The Waves lost the playoffs
When Isla took over as the driver of the Waves ship, the team was a real mess. Given their record, they weren’t excited about putting in much effort into their new season, especially with Isla as the team’s president. They didn’t take her seriously, and even worse, the public and fans didn’t take her seriously either. She had a rough and difficult entry into her new role.
But she didn’t give up once. She became more dedicated to making the team better and making sure no one could do anything but take her seriously. Isla’s determination became infectious and she led the team all the way to the playoffs. Unfortunately, the Waves didn’t win, but with a renewed fire lit inside them, the whole organization is excited for the future.
Isla fought for Lev and kissed Jay
On top of dealing with family issues and starting a high-profile new job, Isla also spent the first season of Running Point going through some interesting romantic problems. Isla and Lev’s engagement hit a rough patch when Lev’s feelings about relationship led to an unfortunate breakup. However, Isla fought to get Lev back and promised that she wouldn’t only focus on her job.
While Isla and Lev don’t get back together in the season 1 finale, he definitely seems as though he’s ready to forgive her and start fresh. But there’s a twist! Toward the end of the episode, Isla reflects with Jay about the Waves’ loss, and they share a kiss. They had some romantic tension all season, and even though he’s moving to Boston, will this further complicate things with Lev?
Cam plans to get his job jack
After Cam was ousted as the Waves’ president, he went to rehab and Isla took over his position. In the final moments of the season, Isla returns to her office and finds Cam sitting at her desk. He announces that he’s back. He’s ready to reclaim his office and job from Isla, but surely, it doesn’t work that easily. He can’t just waltz back in and kick his sister out after a great season, right?
It’s not just that Cam wants to take his job back from Isla, which is bad enough. He’s also revealed to be the one who has been sabotaging her in the press and making her job harder than it needed to be. He was responsible for the leak about Jay’s trade. Cam clearly intends to continue negatively pulling the strings behind the scenes in season 2, but will he really steal his job back?
