Dutton Ranch has continued to go from strength to strength. Not only did the series become the biggest original series launch in Paramount+ history, it also was quickly renewed for a second season.
But while the Yellowstone spin-off seems to have seamlessly slotted into the extended Taylor Sheridan universe of shows, series star Cole Hauser has been honest about the impact of not having Sheridan at the helm of the series.
Although Dutton Ranch is obviously based on characters created by Sheridan, the series was actually created by Chad Feehan, who served as showrunner for season 1 but has since exited the series.
Speaking to to Film Inside NYC, Hauser said: “There were challenges, you know? Not having Taylor [Sheridan] there, for us to really kind of be able to work with these new writers, these new directors, these people—everything had changed.”
Hauser went on to explain that the “only normality that we had whatsoever on set” was the fact he had his returning co-stars, Kelly Reilly and Finn Little, as well as director Christina Alexandra Voros.

He continued: “I enjoy a challenge, it certainly was a challenge. We worked our asses off this year,” he added. “And I don’t think a lot of the outside noise or the thought of ‘what’s the weight of the show?’ was really apparent to me at the time.
“It was about putting my head down and working my ass off with what I had around me. The writers that we had, the new writers that we had, that we had to figure out on our feet how to really perform and tell a story. So, I’m proud of what we accomplished, and I look forward to doing it again.”
Previous showrunner Feehan exited the series before the season 1 premiere, with Deadline reporting that it could have been due to “challenges handling the bold-faced cast, a key component of showrunner’s job”.
It has since been confirmed that SEAL Team creator Benjamin Cavell will be serving as showrunner for Dutton Ranch season 2 – so we can only wait and see what Cavell will bring to the fan-favourite spin-off series and how it’ll follow in the footsteps of its stellar first season.
