The monster is back, and this time, it is personal. Godzilla Minus Zero, the sequel to the Oscar winning Godzilla Minus One, dropped its first teaser on Thursday, offering fans an early glimpse of what its director has already billed as the saga’s closing chapter.

A desperate new threat

The teaser picks up after the events of Godzilla Minus One, with humanity pushed to the edge of extinction and turning to a nuclear bomb in a last ditch bid to halt Godzilla’s rampage. Directed by Takashi Yamazaki, the film is a direct continuation of the 2023 hit, which became the first non English language film to win the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, beating out Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for the honour.

According to the official synopsis, the story is set in 1949, two years after the events of Godzilla Minus One, and follows the Shikishima family as they confront an all new calamity. Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe return as Koichi Shikishima and Noriko, picking up the story that has already captivated audiences worldwide.

Yamazaki confirms the saga ends here

Yamazaki has confirmed that this instalment will close out his Godzilla Minus saga entirely, ruling out a middle chapter in a longer trilogy. In a statement translated from Japanese, he said, “There won’t be a third time. It ends here.”

Setting up a Diwali box office face off

Godzilla Minus Zero is set to release in Japan on November 3, followed by a US theatrical release on November 6, timing that places it squarely in the middle of the Diwali weekend.

The clash comes as the Indian mythological epic Ramayana is also eyeing an IMAX release over the same festive window. Buzz suggests that the makers of Ramayana may move a week earlier to lock in IMAX screens ahead of Godzilla’s arrival, though an official release date is expected only next week, at the film‘s trailer launch event.

With both giants eyeing the same premium screens, the coming weeks could decide who gets first claim on the Diwali box office.
