Masters of the Universe reactions would make He-Man fans proud
Early reactions to Masters of the Universe indicate that the upcoming live-action adaptation has largely succeeded in winning over fans of the long-running franchise. Most recently, several critics and entertainment writers praised the film for its style and tone.
Scott Menzel wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Masters of the Universe is everything this ’80s kid wanted and more. It’s gloriously campy, wildly entertaining, and nonstop fun from beginning to end. Travis Knight completely understood the assignment and delivered exactly what fans of this franchise have been waiting for.” He also praised the film’s ensemble cast and stated that Nicholas Galitzine was “perfectly cast as He-Man.”
The best thing about Masters of the Universe is that it fully embraces its roots as an over-the-top 80s cartoon come to life.

Kevin Fenix compared the experience to the excitement of classic Saturday morning cartoons, writing that the movie delivers “massive action, silly laughs, and real heart.” He added, “Eternia looks like Rudy Obrero’s box art brought to life in full technicolor glory. And yes, MOTU is absolutely all about them muscles.”
Andrew J. Salazar described the movie as “like a sister film to the first Thor.” He added that while the first half struggles at times, the story eventually becomes “an incredibly fun time that’s also visually stimulating.” Salazar also highlighted Galitzine’s performance, calling it “great.” BJ Colangelo wrote, “An absolute blast, laugh out loud funny, and a Fisto-powered punch of heart. I loved it. Everything you could want.”
MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE is like a sister film to the first Thor. Struggles to find its footing in the first half, but once it locks on its themes of fragile masculinity and ego, it makes way for an incredibly fun time that’s also visually stimulating. Despite the generally positive response, not every reaction was entirely favorable. Germain Lussier criticized parts of the film’s execution, writing, “#MastersoftheUniverse has a very fun, weird, yet enjoyable last 20 minutes or so. As for the rest of the movie? It’s a mess. Serious played for laughs, laughs played for emotion, it works, it doesn’t, it really tries but ends up being too awkward.”
Griffin Schiller also criticized several comedic scenes, stating that many jokes felt “painfully trite and unfunny.” However, Schiller strongly praised Jared Leto’s portrayal of Skeletor, calling the character “genuinely excellent.”
It’s clear that everyone involved with MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE has such an unabashed passion for the source material and its impact on their creativity. While at times feeling like a relic from the 2010s IP grab, it finds its strength in proudly embracing the quirky, campy,… pic.twitter.com/nUaNccHnz4
