Even as some of its shows have come to an end in the past couple of years, the NCIS franchise is continuing to expand, with a new spin-off, titled NCIS: New York, on the way.
The new series is being show run by Byron Balasco, while the pilot has been written by The Pitt creator R Scott Gemmill. Gemmill has previous experience with the NCIS franchise, having written on all 14 seasons of NCIS: Los Angeles and serving as a showrunner for seven of them.
It’s no wonder that he has been brought back for this new series, as it is set to see one of NCIS: Los Angeles’s biggest stars reprise their role.
LL Cool J will be returning for his role as Sam Hanna from that series, having also made appearances in both the original NCIS series and its spin-off NCIS: Hawai’i.
LL Cool J will be starring opposite Scott Caan, who has previously appeared in the NCIS universe as Danny ‘Danno’ Williams, his Hawaii Five-0 character who turned up in an episode of NCIS: Los Angeles during a crossover between the two shows. However, in NCIS: New York he will be playing a new character.
NCIS: New York was announced at a press briefing in Los Angeles on Wednesday 15 April, with CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach saying: “LL is like a member of our family at CBS, and he’s done pop-ins at NCIS the last two years, and it’s been really successful.
“And the opportunity for Sam Hanna — who is originally from New York but lived in LA for NCIS: LA — to send him back home felt like a really ripe creative space to play in.”

There are currently three other ongoing series in the NCIS franchise, with the original show continuing along with NCIS: Origins and NCIS: Sydney.
Last year, another spin-off, NCIS: Tony & Ziva, debuted on Paramount+, but it was swiftly cancelled after just one season.
