Netflixreunites with one of TV’s most talked-about directors to reimagine a legendary1970s action classic. The streamer tapped the filmmaker behind its biggest recent hit for a fresh take on the iconicSteve McQueenthriller.

The Getaway remake in works at Netflix
Netflix has teamed up with Philip Barantini to develop a remake of the 1972 Steve McQueen classic The Getaway, The Hollywood Reporter exclusively reported. Peter Craig, known for writing The Town and The Batman, will pen the script for the action crime thriller.
Craig will also produce the project alongside partner Bryan Unkeless through their banner Night Owl Stories. Notably, Craig recently produced Netflix’s hit adaptation Remarkably Bright Creatures. Meanwhile, Andrew Mittman of 1.21 will also produce alongside Barantini and Samantha Beddoe via It’s All Made Up. Mittman played a key role in unlocking the rights and connecting Barantini with Craig.
The original film starred McQueen and Ali MacGraw as an ex-con and his wife. The pair rob a Texas bank as a condition for the man’s prison release. After a deadly double-cross, the couple goes on the run from thieves, thugs, and police.
Walter Hill wrote the original script, adapting the 1958 novel by Jim Thompson. Sam Peckinpah directed the film, which was later remade in 1994 with Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger. Additionally, Kai Dolbashian of 1.21, Rey Reyes, and Night Owl’s Gregory Cohen will executive produce.
Barantini began his career as an actor in Band of Brothers before transitioning to directing. His drama Boiling Point then earned multiple BAFTA nominations for its single-take format. He later created Adolescence with Stephen Graham, which became a major viewer sensation for Netflix.
The Getaway marks a reteaming between Barantini and Craig. The two are currently in production on Rabbit Rabbit, a hostage drama starring Adam Driver and Regina Hall. Barantini will next direct Enola Holmes 3 for Netflix.
