Big news, Grey’s Anatomy fans – a new spin-off is officially on the way!

The news was first reported by Deadline, with the publication revealing that a currently untitled medical drama in the Grey’s Anatomy universe will be co-created by the original show’s creator Shonda Rhimes, along with Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Meg Marinis.
The new show, which has been ordered straight to series without a pilot and is set to premiere in 2027, will also be executive produced by Grey’s Anatomy star and legend Ellen Pompeo.
Deadline has reported that the show is described as an “edgy drama about a team at a rural West Texas medical centre – the last chance for care before miles of nowhere”.

Unlike previous Grey’s Anatomy spin-offs, Private Practice and Station 19, this new series is not expected to star a series regular character from the original show, and will instead be built around a new group of doctors, and connected to the world of Grey’s Anatomy via one or more characters.
The publication reported that Debbie Allen’s Catherine Fox could be involved.
Marinis said in a statement: “I am incredibly excited to expand the Grey’s Anatomy universe. This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion and connection audiences have loved from Grey’s for more than two decades — all set in my home state of Texas.
“I am so grateful to Shonda Rhimes for creating this dynamic world and feel so fortunate that I get to be a part of it.”

Details for the spin-off are currently thin on the ground, and it is not yet known how many episodes it will run for. However, it has been suggested that both it and Grey’s Anatomy’s upcoming 23rd season could be shorter seasons, with the original series airing in the autumn, followed by the spin-off in midseason (early 2027).
Grey’s Anatomy is currently at something of a crossroads, with the most recent season finale having seen the departures of two long-running fan-favourite characters, Kim Raver’s Dr Teddy Altman and Kevin McKidd’s Dr Owen Hunt.
