Ofcom has launched an investigation into Married at First Sight UK after receiving a complaint about the Channel 4 show.

The UK media regulator announced in its latest broadcast bulletin on Monday (20 July) that it is looking into a complaint relating to fairness and privacy.

An Ofcom spokesperson told Radio Times: “We are investigating a Fairness and Privacy complaint about Married At First Sight UK.”

However, they did not reveal any further information.

The news comes amid a wave of controversy surrounding the show after a BBC Panorama investigation in May revealed sexual misconduct and rape allegations from three female cast members on the reality dating show.

All three men involved have denied the allegations.

Earlier this month, a former Married at First Sight UK cast member was arrested on suspicion of rape.

In May, Channel 4 pulled all previous episodes of Married at First Sight UK from its streaming and linear services in light of the Panorama investigation, and launched an external review into welfare on the show, which is due to finish later this summer.

Ofcom previously said it would examine an “advance copy” of Channel 4’s review into welfare on the show and would “urgently” consider whether any regulatory action is required.

The Married at First Sight franchise, which also has popular Australian and US iterations, sees couples marrying after meeting for the first time on their wedding day and going on ‘honeymoon’, before moving in together and navigating their relationships.
