As beloved sci-fi franchise Stargate approaches its next iteration with a new Amazon MGM Studios series in the works, Richard Dean Anderson – who has played Jack O’Neill across multiple series and one film – has spoken about why he won’t be involved.
Anderson appeared at Metz’Torii convention in France, where he was asked about the new series, which was confirmed to be in development in November 2025.
Anderson said of the new project: “I talked to Brad Wright, who was the exec producer of my Stargate, and he talked to me about the new one. The new producers, the new owners, want to have their own entity with that franchise name attached to it. So, they’ll have all-new characters.
“They haven’t asked me to be a part of it. I’m glad they’re not putting me on the spot to make it awkward to say, possibly, no. But, yeah, it’s different, it’s a new one. I’m the old guy.”
When asked whether he would make a cameo in the new series if he was asked to do so, he responded: “I can’t say.”
The new Stargate series will be created, written, executive produced and showrun by Martin Gero, a Stargate veteran and showrunner on series such as Blindspot.
When news of the series was first confirmed, Gero said in a statement: “Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a Story Editor on Stargate: Atlantis. I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series, Stargate taught me everything about making television – it’s written into my DNA.
“I’m beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase. For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith – this one’s for you. And for those that are new to our world – I promise you’re in for something extraordinary.”

The Stargate franchise originally kicked off with a feature film in 1994, and has since spawned multiple series and films.
It was recently one of the shows most named by Radio Times readers when asked for the best sci-fi series of all time, coming in at number nine on the list.
