Is the continuous pressure to achieve a flawless physique doing more physical damage than good? Bollywood actor Taapsee Pannu recently challenged the cultural fixation on maintaining a flat midriff by sharing her personal struggles with body image.

Taapsee Pannu says a little belly bulge is healthy, urges women to stop “torturing” themselves for the perfect midriff
In a candid revelation on Instagram as reported by Hindustan Times, the actor detailed how she overpushed her physical limits before understanding the biology of female fitness. Pannu explained that she grew up highly fit but remained confused by persistent lower belly fat, prompting a gruelling exercise routine that ultimately backfired. Pannu recalled her experience and said, “When you over-push yourself, it rings an alarm in your brain that your body needs protection.”
Understanding water retention and biological design
The actor explained that overexertion triggers a defensive mechanism where the female body stores fluids instead of shedding weight. Warning her followers against overexerting their bodies, Pannu noted, “So instead of actually losing water retention, the body starts retaining it and then that lower belly fat, which might actually not just be fat, it’s also water retention, it stays, and it increases by overworking out, which I really believe people should not do.”
Her perspective shifted after consulting health expert Munmun Ganeriwal, who explained that minimal lower abdominal fat protects internal systems. Pannu noted, “It’s actually important to have that little bit of fat, a little bit of water retention under the belly because that’s where your reproductive organs are, and they need protection.”
She strongly urged women to prioritize biological health over curated social media aesthetics. Pannu emphasized, “So just to get those picture-perfect Instagram pictures, please don’t torture yourself. It’s supposed to be healthy to have that little bit of bulge and have that fat there. Please don’t torture yourself.”
Shifting focus to upcoming cinematic ventures
Aside from body advocacy, the actor continues to make strides in her cinematic career. She was recently seen in the courtroom drama Assi, directed by filmmaker Anubhav Sinha. The critically acclaimed feature co-starred Kani Kusruti, Revathy, Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub.
Pannu is now preparing for her upcoming Netflix film Gandhari. The thriller is directed by Devashish Makhija and written by Kanika Dhillon, who has also produced the movie under Kathha Productions.
The narrative centres on a determined mother tracking her missing child and features Swastika Mukherjee and Ishwak Singh, as she readies to once again experience a global streaming release later this year.
