The Boroughs season 2 chances just got a major boost after Netflix's latest update

The Boroughs is finally building some momentum after a lackluster first few days on Netflix, and it’s making The Boroughs season 2 much more likely.

According to Netflix’s latest ratings report, The Boroughs racked up 9.5 million views during the first season’s first full week on the streamer. That’s up from 5.6 million views between the series premiere on May 21 and through May 24.

The Boroughs was officially the top show on Netflix between May 25 and 31, which is a great sign that more people are discovering the series after Memorial Day weekend.

Of course, season 2 isn’t a sure bet just yet, but it’s definitely promising to see more viewers finding the series, checking it out, and likely continuing to watch through the season 1 finale. That’s super important for a show that doesn’t have the opening that many probably expected right out the gate. Maybe this show is more of a slow burn.

It’s hard to remember a scripted sci-fi show like this that opened with such a low number getting renewed for season 2. If The Boroughs continued with another 5-million-view week during its first full week on Netflix, I definitely would have been worried. The fact that we saw viewership double week-over-week should give fans hope that season 2 is possible.

The Four Seasons, which premiered on May 29, knocked The Boroughs out of the top spot on the daily Netflix Top 10, but since then, the series has bounced around but remained one of the most popular titles on Netflix. I think the show needs a big-ish third week to score that season 2 renewal or at least make the powers that be feel comfortable picking up a show like this for another season.

There’s obviously no doubt, after the season 1 finale, that The Boroughs season 2 could happen. There’s so much more to the story. Even though Sam (Alfred Molina) and the rest of the gang vanquished those evil vampires and Mother was killed, there are still so many questions remaining about Sam’s life, future, and whether the government is somehow involved in something like this.

The Boroughs, which is produced by the Duffer Brothers, could go full Stranger Things or even E.T. in the second season.

As mentioned, time will tell if Netflix picks up the series for a new season. I think if most fans had their wish, we’d definitely see Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Clarke Peters, Denis O’Hare, Jena Malone, and the rest of this great cast return for season 2.
