Cooler temperatures are expected on the Merseyside Coast for the opening rounds of The Open 2026.

The UK heatwave has eased a little just in time for the start of the fourth and final golf major of the year, which is back on the iconic links of Royal Birkdale for an 11th time.

The sport’s oldest title remains among its most prestigious and every player in the field will have dreamed of getting their hands on the Claret Jug.

None more so than local hero Tommy Fleetwood, who will be hugely popular as he tees off alongside Jordan Speith and John Rahm on Thursday.

Defending champion Scottie Scheffler has looked out of sorts of late but will hope to put that behind him and make a strong start to his title defence when he heads out with Tyrell Hatton and Bryson DeChambeau just before 10am.

Fans of Rory McIlroy will not be in short supply but they’ll have to wait until mid-afternoon to see The Masters champion begin his pursuit of another Claret Jug alongside Matt Fitzpatrick and Xander Schauffele.
