Apne TV Web Series Plot Summaries: Spoilers and Storylines

1. “Aashram” (MX Player): Delving into Faith, Power, and Deception

“Aashram,” directed by Prakash Jha, is a gripping crime drama exploring the dark underbelly of faith and the exploitation of vulnerable communities. The narrative centers around Kashipur Waale Baba Nirala (Bobby Deol), a charismatic and influential spiritual leader revered by millions. On the surface, the Aashram offers solace, free education, and healthcare to the downtrodden, particularly Dalits. However, beneath this veneer of benevolence lies a sinister world of crime, corruption, and sexual exploitation.

The storyline unfolds through multiple perspectives. Pammi (Aaditi Pohankar), a young Dalit woman, seeks refuge in the Aashram after facing caste-based discrimination and societal oppression. Initially drawn to Baba’s teachings and the promise of a better life, she gradually uncovers the horrifying reality of the Aashram’s operations. Her journey is one of disillusionment and rebellion, as she becomes determined to expose Baba’s true nature and fight for justice.

Ujagar Singh (Darshan Kumar), a dedicated police officer, becomes suspicious of the Aashram’s activities following a series of missing person reports and unexplained deaths linked to the institution. His investigation faces numerous obstacles, including political interference and the unwavering faith of Baba’s followers. Ujagar’s relentless pursuit of the truth puts him and his team in constant danger, as Baba’s powerful network extends deep into the corridors of power.

The series explores the complex dynamics of faith, power, and manipulation. Baba Nirala uses his influence to control his followers, exploiting their vulnerabilities and promising them salvation in exchange for unwavering loyalty. He runs a sophisticated criminal enterprise, involving land grabbing, drug trafficking, and sexual abuse. The Aashram serves as a front for these illegal activities, shielded by the blind faith of its devotees and the complicity of corrupt officials.

The plot thickens with the introduction of other key characters, including Bhopa (Chandan Roy Sanyal), Baba’s trusted right-hand man, who manages the Aashram’s day-to-day operations and ensures the smooth functioning of its criminal activities. There’s also Dr. Natasha (Anupriya Goenka), a forensic expert who gets involved in the investigation and uncovers crucial evidence linking Baba to the crimes.

Each season of “Aashram” delves deeper into the Aashram’s inner workings and the extent of Baba’s influence. The storyline explores the psychological manipulation techniques employed by Baba to control his followers, the systemic corruption that enables his criminal enterprise, and the challenges faced by those who dare to challenge his authority. The series doesn’t shy away from depicting the brutal realities of caste-based discrimination and the exploitation of vulnerable communities.

2. “Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story” (SonyLIV): Unraveling India’s Biggest Stock Market Scam

“Scam 1992,” directed by Hansal Mehta, is a biographical crime drama that chronicles the life and times of Harshad Mehta (Pratik Gandhi), a stockbroker who orchestrated one of the biggest financial scams in Indian history. The series is based on the book “The Scam: Who Won, Who Lost, Who Got Away” by Sucheta Dalal and Debashis Basu.

The storyline begins in the late 1980s, when Harshad Mehta, a relatively unknown stockbroker, enters the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) with ambitious dreams and a relentless drive to succeed. He quickly rises through the ranks, leveraging his sharp intellect and risk-taking abilities to make a fortune in the stock market.

Harshad’s success is fueled by a complex web of financial manipulations, involving the use of “ready forward” (RF) deals, a type of interbank lending. He exploits loopholes in the banking system to divert funds into the stock market, artificially inflating stock prices and creating a massive bubble. He essentially prints money by colluding with corrupt bank officials and politicians.

Sucheta Dalal (Shreya Dhanwanthary), a financial journalist working for The Times of India, becomes suspicious of Harshad’s meteoric rise and begins investigating his activities. Her relentless pursuit of the truth uncovers the intricate details of the scam, exposing the systemic corruption that enabled it.

The series meticulously recreates the atmosphere of the 1990s Bombay stock market, showcasing the frenetic trading floors, the complex financial instruments, and the political machinations that influenced the market. It delves into the technical details of the scam, explaining the intricacies of RF deals and the loopholes that Harshad exploited.

The storyline also explores the personal life of Harshad Mehta, portraying him as a complex and charismatic individual driven by ambition and a desire to prove himself. He is depicted as a loving family man, but also as someone who is willing to bend the rules and take risks to achieve his goals.

“Scam 1992” is not just a story about a financial scam; it’s also a commentary on the Indian economic landscape of the 1990s, the rampant corruption in the banking system, and the power of investigative journalism. The series highlights the importance of accountability and the consequences of unchecked greed.

The climax of the series sees Sucheta Dalal publishing her exposé, triggering a massive stock market crash and exposing Harshad Mehta’s fraudulent activities. The ensuing investigation leads to his arrest and a protracted legal battle. The series ends with Harshad Mehta’s conviction and subsequent death in prison, leaving behind a legacy of financial ruin and a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked ambition.

3. “Special Ops” (Disney+ Hotstar): A Global Hunt for a Mastermind Terrorist

“Special Ops,” created and directed by Neeraj Pandey, is an action-packed espionage thriller that follows a team of RAW agents on a global mission to track down a mastermind terrorist responsible for a series of attacks on India.

The storyline centers around Himmat Singh (Kay Kay Menon), a seasoned RAW officer who believes that all the terrorist attacks in India over the past two decades are linked to a single mastermind. He assembles a team of five undercover agents, each with unique skills and expertise, and sends them on a dangerous mission to different parts of the world to gather intelligence and track down the elusive terrorist.

The team members include Farooq Ali (Karan Tacker), a young and ambitious agent operating in Dubai; Ruhani Khan (Meher Vij), a skilled analyst working in the RAW headquarters; Avinash (Muzamil Ibrahim), a field operative based in Istanbul; Bala (Vipul Gupta), an expert in cyber warfare; and Juhi Kashyap (Saiyami Kher), a new recruit who is assigned to a high-risk operation in Iran.

The agents operate undercover in various countries, including Dubai, Istanbul, Tehran, and Karachi, facing numerous challenges and dangers along the way. They gather intelligence, infiltrate terrorist networks, and engage in covert operations to disrupt terrorist plots.

The storyline is intricately woven, with multiple subplots and interconnected characters. The series explores the personal lives of the agents, their motivations, and the sacrifices they make in the line of duty. It also delves into the psychological toll of espionage and the moral dilemmas faced by intelligence officers.

As the investigation progresses, Himmat Singh and his team uncover a complex web of international conspiracies, involving powerful politicians, corrupt officials, and ruthless terrorists. They realize that the mastermind they are hunting is not just a terrorist, but a highly intelligent and resourceful individual with a vast network of support.

The series is known for its realistic portrayal of espionage, its fast-paced action sequences, and its compelling characters. It showcases the challenges and complexities of intelligence gathering, the sacrifices made by intelligence officers, and the constant threat of terrorism.

The climax of “Special Ops” sees Himmat Singh and his team finally confronting the mastermind terrorist, engaging in a final showdown that puts their lives on the line. The series ends with a sense of closure, but also with a lingering sense of uncertainty, hinting at the ongoing threat of terrorism and the need for constant vigilance. The series highlights the dedication and bravery of those who work tirelessly behind the scenes to protect national security.
