“I work alone.” “Not anymore.” Apple TV has unveiled the first look trailer for Matchbox The Movie, an action movie that yes indeed is inspired by / based on the Mattel miniature car toys. Somehow they turned them into a movie, an all-out action thriller with lots of vehicles and chases. Apple however is sending this right to streaming in October in the fall–this first trailer comes directly from this year’s Comic-Con where it premiered. “Save the world. Bring your friends.” The plot follows Sean, a former soldier who reunites with childhood friends after a successful mission, only to be kidnapped and framed. They must clear their names and rediscover their friendship in a high-stakes cross-continental adventure. With a terrific ensemble cast featuring John Cena, Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Arturo Castro, Teyonah Parris, Corey Stoll, Danai Gurira, Bill Camp, Golshifteh Farahani. Ever since it was announced, I’ve been curious to see what this will look like –how will they make these tiny little car toys into a movie? Well, now we have a look & it’s as ridiculous as it could be – an over-the-top action comedy with Cena as head honcho tough guy. And of course it’s filled with cool chases, an assortment of vehicles, though not too sure about the whole premise.

Matchbox The Movie is directed by veteran stuntman / filmmaker filmmaker Sam Hargrave, director of all three Extraction films and “The Last Frontier” series previously, plus lots of stunt work on many big Hollywood movies like Deadpool 2 & Avengers: Endgame. The screenplay is writer by David Coggeshall (writer of Prey, Orphan: First Kill, The Family Plan 1 & 2, The Deliverance). Produced by David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, Robbie Brenner, Ynon Kreiz. Made by Apple Studios, Skydance Media, Mattel Studios. Apple releases Hargrave’s Matchbox The Movie heading to streaming directly on Apple TV starting October 9th, 2026 this fall. So does this look any good or not?
