Bhumi Satish Pednekkar is set to return to a darker, more restrained space with her upcoming series Daldal, where she plays DCP Rita Ferreira. While the genre leans into grit, the actor says the real challenge lay in understanding a character who communicates more through silence than expression.

Based on Vish Dhamija’s novel Bhendi Bazaar, Daldal required Bhumi to unlearn several instinctive performance choices. Speaking about her first response to the script, she admitted that Rita Ferreira was not an easy character to decode. “That’s why it took me four to five months,” Bhumi said, explaining that the process involved long discussions and debates with producer Suresh Triveni to arrive at the emotional core of the role.

She recalled how even basic reactions had to be rethought. “For example, the first time she sees a dead body, she’s like, have I done this? What’s going on?” Bhumi shared. “I thought maybe she would throw up. Suresh was like, no. She will not throw up because that’s the first thing you see people do.” The actor added that this forced her to question familiar acting cues. “I asked him, then what do I do? What am I supposed to do?”

According to Bhumi, Rita’s emotional range is deliberately narrow, which made the performance demanding in a different way. “Her spectrum is so small that I had to be creative within that,” she said, noting that even small shifts—such as the way Rita reacts to her mother—were significant. “Every time she saw her mother, the reaction was different.”

The experience, she added, was creatively exhausting but deeply satisfying. “I was exhausted by the end of it, exhausted to be still. I don’t think I was ever this happy when something was done,” Bhumi said, reflecting on the journey.

Directed by Amrit Raj Gupta and produced by Vikram Malhotra and Suresh Triveni, Daldal is an Abundantia Entertainment production. The series also stars Samara Tijori and Aditya Rawal in key roles and is set to premiere on Prime Video on January 30.
