Bhumika Chawla, who entered Hindi cinema with the memorable Tere Naam and went on to deliver notable performances in Run, Gandhi My Father, MS Dhoni: The Untold Story and several acclaimed regional films, has carved a distinct space for herself with her graceful screen presence and grounded choices. Even today, with selective ventures across films and web projects, she continues to remain relevant without losing the quiet simplicity that has long defined her.

Bhumika Chawla warns against modern-day consumerism; says “Owning too much stuff can start owning you”

It is this personal philosophy that shapes her latest reflections on lifestyle and consumption. Speaking about the increasing shift toward simpler living, Chawla shared, “Yes, now I’m realising how minimalism is important.” She believes the need for this shift has intensified because of the pace at which consumer habits have escalated. “Consumerism is at its peak. People who are susceptible to influence do get influenced seeing social media trends.”

She points out that retail therapy has become a coping mechanism for many, while others feel pressured to constantly update wardrobes to match fast-changing online aesthetics. According to her, the widespread use of digital payments has only contributed to this cycle. “Money being spent through apps does not feel like it’s going out of your pocket as much as old-fashioned cash.”

Chawla’s concerns go beyond buying patterns. She cautions against linking personal identity with material possessions. “When one starts to identify one’s worth with what one owns or wears, it can lead to shallow living,” she says, reiterating that the old value of “simple living and high thinking” still holds weight today.

She draws a clear connection between physical clutter and emotional fatigue. “Sometimes owning too much stuff can be mentally tiring. When you’re busy managing or organising things, things start owning you.” The rise of malls, gadgets, brands and a booming market for consumer goods worries her, especially when the environmental consequences remain largely overlooked. Comparing it to the trajectory of personal growth, she adds, “Aren’t we all reckless when we are young? And by the time we realise how precious our Mother Earth is, it might be too late.”

Her reflections also extend to the next generation. Surrounded by plastic toys and battery-operated distractions, she feels children today need more grounding experiences. “Playgroups should focus on growing plants, art, cooking, stitching, sports, sitting outdoors — not fancy material stuff,” she says.

With her thoughtful take on minimalism and mindful living, Chawla adds an important voice to the ongoing conversation around conscious consumption—reminding that sometimes, less truly is more.
