Former Fox Filmed Entertainment chief Bill Mechanic has revealed that Hugh Jackman’s X-Men was once met with deep skepticism inside the studio. Former Fox Filmed Entertainment chief Bill Mechanic has opened up about the studio’s initial reaction to X-Men.

He revealed that the film faced sharp skepticism from top leadership. Speaking to Business Insider, Mechanic recalled that Rupert Murdoch and other executives were not convinced about the project’s prospects. “They saw it and thought it was a disaster — why would anybody make a Marvel comic into a movie?” he said, pointing to the hesitation within the company at the time.

Mechanic’s comments emerged during a conversation related to the upcoming 4K re-release of Fight Club. He led Fox Filmed Entertainment from 1994 to 2000, a period that saw the studio deliver major commercial successes such as Die Hard with a Vengeance, Independence Day, and Titanic, each becoming the highest-grossing film of its release year. Despite these achievements, Mechanic indicated that his working relationship with the studio’s ownership was often strained.

At the time, Fox operated under News Corporation, owned by Murdoch. Reflecting on their differing perspectives, Mechanic said, “I always thought what Rupert wanted was Page Six,” before adding, “He didn’t think movies were there to challenge.”

Additionally, the former Fox CEO also described a specific internal meeting where Murdoch reacted strongly to Fight Club, the adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk’s novel starring Brad Pitt and Edward Norton. Recalling the exchange, he said, “[Rupert] starts attacking, and he said, ‘What kind of sick f***ing human being would make a movie like this?’”

The case of X-Men became a notable example of this divide. The film was released shortly after Mechanic’s departure from the studio and went on to achieve major commercial success, launching a franchise that would span multiple parts.
