Veteran filmmaker David Dhawan has shared his thoughts on filmmaking choices and the tendency within the industry to chase trends, while also reflecting on the example of his mentor in an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama.

EXCLUSIVE: David Dhawan on not following trends: “You shouldn’t open the bonnet of a running car”
Speaking about his inspiration, Dhawan said, “My guru has always been Manmohan Desai. I still revere him. He was the king of entertainers. There is nobody like him. I learnt from him. I did try (to follow trends) in some films like Aankhen but then I came to my (type of) entertainment.” His remarks underline the lasting impact of Manmohan Desai on his career and creative approach.
Dhawan also cautioned against blindly following industry trends, using a vivid analogy to make his point. “You shouldn’t open the bonnet of a running car. The car is bloody running, still you are fingering it out. Don’t follow a trend; I would say this to directors. When a Rajshri (Productions) film becomes a hit, people follow that trend. You have to see what you are comfortable in making.”
Referencing the banner Rajshri Productions, he highlighted how success often triggers imitation, something he believes filmmakers should resist. According to Dhawan, staying true to one’s own storytelling instincts is far more important than replicating what is currently popular.
His comments serve as a reminder that consistency in one’s creative voice and comfort with a particular style can be more valuable than chasing fleeting trends in the film industry.
Dhawan’s next Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is all set to release in cinemas on June 5. The film stars Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde in lead roles.
