Veteran filmmaker David Dhawan spoke candidly about his long-standing bond with Salman Khan in an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, recalling their successful collaborations and the actor’s attitude towards work. Having delivered several popular entertainers together over the years, David described Salman as one of the easiest stars to work with and praised his screen presence.

Speaking about managing multiple stars in films featuring actors like Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt, David shared how handling actors is an important part of filmmaking. He said, “Sometimes a little happens. Filmmaking in Bombay, in India is about how you handle an actor. That itself is an art. Especially when you work with two actors, definitely some actors may feel things. But if you ask me, I have never really had a problem.”

The director also addressed frequent comparisons between his son Varun Dhawan and stars like Salman Khan and Govinda. According to David, every actor faces comparisons and has to grow through them. “Somewhere or the other I had to manage situations, but it has been very good. That is his job—to overcome comparisons. He can do it. He is performing. He is a disciplined actor also. That is very important. And he has become choosy now. Earlier he would do films more easily. Now he says, ‘Dad, I don’t want to do it. I want to do a film where I feel I have done something new.’”, he told Bollywood Hungama.

He added that public scrutiny has always been part of stardom, stating, “Everyone goes through this. Salman was spoken about a lot earlier too. Even now people talk. But he is an excellent guy. I have worked with him the most. I have had the best journey with him.”

Recalling their equation on sets, David emphasised the trust they share. He shared, “We are fire together. We love to work. Even recently I was shooting and he came there to meet me and said, ‘Let’s do something now.’ He has never questioned me either. He has done films with me where he was the hero, but another actor may have had a better role—and he never questioned it. Even after the film finishes, he would jokingly ask, ‘You didn’t leave anything more for me?’ Any time I can call him and shoot with him.”

Summing up Salman Khan’s appeal, David concluded, “Salman is also a good-looking personality. His personality is something else. Even if he simply walks into frame, there is charm.”
